Three-Phase Approach to Employment Success
Discovery is a person-centred process designed to build an employment profile for the participant. It is the foundation of the Customised Employment Program, gathering key information about an individual’s:
- Interests
- Strengths
- Skills
- Support needs
How It Works
Discovery involves observations, interviews, and real-world assessments conducted in natural and structured environments. The findings are documented in a Discovery Report, which forms the basis of the participant’s Career Plan.
Building on the Discovery Phase, this stage involves customising job opportunities based on the participant’s profile and employer needs. This stage will be determined by the information gained throughout the
discovery phase and in collaboration with the participant and other key stakeholders.
Questions to ask:
- Does an existing position exist?
- Does the person need a created or modified position? This will involve “Job Carving”
The answer to this will determine the next steps. Options include:
- Does an existing position exist?
- Does the person need a created or modified position? This will involve “Job Carving”
Referring to the established Career and Support Plan, identify the support required throughout the on-boarding, induction and learning of the job, with both employer and participant.
Support for the employee may be both vocational and non-vocational support, such as personal care and social activities.
Supports that may be offered to the employer include:
- Disability Awareness and Confidence training.
- Assistance with arranging a Supported Wage Assessment (when applicable).
- Applying for workplace modifications.
- Provision of support for the person, to manage any barriers that may put their job at risk.
- Providing the right level of support. Plan to phase this out if ongoing needs are met.
- DES providers can offer ongoing support for people who do not need one-to-one ongoing support.
