December 2024 was a busy time for Access with Christmas lunches, Service Awards and IDPwD celebrations. For Access Laundry at Lithgow, those busy events also featured an Open Day at the laundry, where Managing Director of Access Laundry, Shane Coombe, spoke about his vision to create sustainable and meanignful employment for people with disability working at the laundry.
“There are two factors involved in employing people at Access,” said Shane. “One is a permanent job through thier life and the other is a stepping stone to somewhere else.”
Shane wants to focus more on the stepping stone strategy. If all the positions are filled at the laundry, it is limited in the amount of people it can help. “By continuing to be a stepping stone, we create a much wider acceptence in the community for employing people with disability.
According to Shane, a private company (Access Laundry) and an NDIS service provider (Access Industries) partnering together to achieve a mutual objective is quite unusual.
Mr Coombe said the project focuses on transferrabe skills to ensure an employee’s career isn’t limited to working in ine role. We look forward to supporting this project designed to provide a much wider world of opportunity for people with disability.
